Magnac-Bourg

A traditional resting place on one of the roads to Compostella (the Vézélay route), and nestling in the Limousin countryside, is the village of Magnac-Bourg. Designated as a ‘stopover village’ (Village Etape) for just over twenty years, and sitting astride the old RN20, it is conveniently close to the A20 Autoroute.

Commune de Magnac-Bourg

Here are traces of human occupation dating back to prehistory, and to the Roman era. From the middle ages to more recent times, Magnac Bourg has been held by successions of lords, including those of the house of Lamothe-Salignac-Fénelon.

Its XVth century gothic church, with a XIXth century clock-tower, boasts some remarkable XVIth century stained-glass windows.

A number of houses from the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries are to be found in the centre of the bourg, and surely deserve a detour. You mustn’t miss the maison à deux tourelles (1601), and the maison de La Bastide.

A number of houses are still crowned with their épis de faîtage (enamelled terra-cotta ornamental pieces) which many consider to be the village’s ‘signature’, and a source of local pride.

In the bourg you’ll find houses built using the locally extracted gneiss and micaschiste (igneous and sedimentary rocks), and often with granite door-surrounds. Small, locally-made, flat tiles form familiar rectangular roofs.

Magnac-Bourg, is set in a landscape of woodland, lakes and pasture-land, where you’ll find our russet-coloured Limousin cattle quietly grazing.

A wander around the village will give you the opportunity to enjoy any number of views over the wonderful, surrounding countryside.

Here too is a resting place on the great migratory flight of the grey-coloured crane: a natural spectacle, always to be marvelled at.

The Tourist Office will happily let you have a town-plan; and numerous shop-keepers and artisans will be only too-pleased to be of service during the course of your visit.
